Baseball: NU Stays Hot in Sweep of Geneva

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team took on Geneva College in a doubleheader Wednesday as part of their Spring Break slate of games.

The Cadets swept the Golden Tornadoes with a 7-3 win in game one and an 8-3 win in game two. NU now stands at 8-2 on the season, the second-best record through ten games in school history (1936 team posted a record of 9-0-1).

Norwich started the scoring early, plating two runs in the home half of the first inning. Sophomore center fielder Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.) roped an RBI double that plated senior designated hitter Michael Koytikh (Melrose, Mass.) for a 1-0 lead. Callahan then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder PJ Morales (Bakersfield, Calif.) for the 2-0 edge.

Geneva got one run back in the top of the second to cut the lead in half at 2-1, and tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth frame.

Callahan gave the Cadets the lead again in the home half of the fifth on another RBI double. Freshman left fielder Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) came around to score on the double after reaching base on a single. Morales was hit by a pitch later in the inning to load the bases and freshman shortstop Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to force a run in for the 4-2 lead. The rally continued as Callahan scored on a wild pitch with two outs before junior second baseman Abel Oropeza (Whittier, Calif.) ripped a two-run single to center for the 7-2 lead.

Sophomore Matt Ingraffia (Lake Grove, N.Y.) improved to 2-0 on the mound after a five-inning effort. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while surrendering one walk and striking out six batters. Freshman Noah Carpenter (Herkimer, N.Y.) threw two innings of relief, allowing one run (unearned) on three hits. He struck out two batters.

Koytikh posted three hits and Oropeza finished the game with two hits, while Koytikh and Callahan each scored two runs.

In game two, Norwich opened up a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Hayes hit a hard ground ball into left field that scored Oropeza (who drew a walk earlier in the inning). Callahan collected his third RBI of the day on a single to center that plated junior third baseman Ryland Richardson (Windsor, Vt.).

The Golden Tornadoes struck for one run in the bottom of the second to make it a 2-1 game before the NU bats got hot again in the top of the third. Freshman first baseman Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) lifted an RBI single to center, scoring Morales for a 3-1 score. Richardson then hit a hard single to left that scored Carpenter to extend the Cadet lead to 4-1. Hayes then stepped to the plate and swatted a two-run single into left field that scored Miller and Richardson for the 6-1 score.

In the top of the fifth, Callahan hit an RBI single to left field and Morales grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to make it 8-1. Geneva scored a run in the home half of the fifth and one in the seventh for the 8-3 final.

Freshman Ben Emero (Medway, Mass.) picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. He allowed two earned runs on 10 hits and one walk over six innings and struck out four batters. Freshman Jordan Talbot (Belchertown, Mass.) tossed an inning in relief, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out two batters.

Norwich now stands at 8-2. The Cadets are next in action on Friday, taking on Gettysburg in Vero Beach, Florida. Game times are set for 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
