Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a tough 3-2 loss in its first-ever trip to William Smith on Saturday afternoon.
Norwich (18-7-0, 15-3-0 NEHC) fell behind 3-0 and couldn't quite complete the comeback bid as the Cadets fell to the Herons to suffer their second loss of the weekend.
Juniors Mikah Baptiste (Ottawa, Ontario) and Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass.) each scored goals, but it wasn't enough for Norwich as William Smith (10-14-1, 8-9-1) leveled the all-time series at 1-1 in the Herons' first year as a member of the NEHC.
Norwich outshot William Smith 32-17, but the Herons were opportunistic on their chances, scoring twice early in the second period and then added another early in the third period to shock the Cadets.
Baptiste ended the shutout bid at the 8:21 mark of the third period. She slipped a wrist shot past Amanda Aalto for her 14th goal of the season. Ann-Frederique Guay (St. Lambert-de-Lauzon, Qubebec) and Taylor Tom (Kenora, Ontario) were credited with assists on the tally.
At the 16:31 mark of the period, Masotta made it a one-goal game with her 13th goal of the season. She picked up a rebound and tapped the loose puck across the goal line. The power-play goal was assisted by Ingrid Holstad-Berge (Stavanger, Norway) and Guay.
Norwich earned the No. 2 seed for the NEHC Tournament and will face a to be determined opponent on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. in Kreitzberg Arena.
The Cadets will face either Johnson & Wales, Salem State or Plymouth State depending on what happens in Wednesday's first round games. Johnson & Wales hosts New England College, while Plymouth State hosts Salem State. The lowest remaining seed will head to top-seeded Elmira College, while the other winner will head to Norwich.
