Women's Basketball: Cadet Defense Stifles Dean, Stitely Sets New Career-High

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's basketball team used strong defense to overwhelm Dean in a 74-50 win over the Bulldogs, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup in Andrews Hall.

Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored 26 points, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc and pulled down six rebounds and dishing out four assists, with seven steals. Brittany Graham (Rye, N.H.) had four steals and six rebounds, knocking down a shot from the floor and Hannah Stitely (Westminster, Md.) added a career-high 17 points in the matchup.

Norwich recorded 18 steals in the contest, while forcing the Bulldogs to commit 31 turnovers. Norwich was out rebounded on the glass, but scored 16 points off of fast break opportunities. The Cadets never trailed in the contest, holding an advantage for 39:36 of game time.

Norwich jumped out to an early eight-point lead scoring on four of their opening five positions of the game. After Tori Viau put the Bulldogs on the board, Stitely knocked down a jumper, which Brewster followed the next time down the floor with a three-pointer.

The Cadets jumped out to a 14-point lead with 3:40 remaining in the first quarter.  The Cadets would end the quarter holding an 22-11 lead.

The Bulldogs did not go quietly, outscoring the Cadets 16-14 in the second frame, going into the halftime break trailing 36-27.

Norwich hit a grove in the third quarter, using a 14-0 scoring run over 3:08 to take control of the contest on their way to the victory. The Cadets led by as many as 26 in the fourth quarter.

Norwich (9-11, 7-6 GNAC) will host Rivier in Andrews Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 pm. They will then travel to Regis on Thursday, Feb. 17 in a contest that was rescheduled from their originally scheduled Jan. 6 matchup.  They will then wrap up the regular season with their Senior Day tilt against the University of St. Joseph.
