Box Score 2 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Norwich saw a school record fall on Saturday as they defeated MCLA 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-17) before falling to Utica in a five-set match 3-2 (25-18, 25-22, 9-25, 11-25, 15-10).
Against MCLA, Kathryn Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) earned 13 kills in the match and Addison Hall (Apple Valley, Calif.) earned 12 kills while hitting .579. Sarah Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) also added a kill while collecting 40 assists.
In game one against the Trailblazers, Kathryn Farnum, with the Cadets leading 8-7, earned her second kill of the match and 728th of her career to become the school's all-time kills leader.
The Cadets trailed 20-15 in the second set when Sarah Farnum earned her lone kill of the match to spark a 10-2 run that saw Norwich take the lead from the Trailblazers and win the set.
In the second match of the day facing the Pioneers, Norwich who had won their first 12 sets of the season dropped the opening set to Utica 25-18.
Kathryn Farnum and Ana Lopez (Laredo, Texas) led the Cadets with 11 kills in the match, while Hall and Julia Schroeder (Victorville, Calif.) added 10 each. Freshman Abby Kanaga (Apopka, Fla.) added five kills and Sarah Farnum had 47 assists for Norwich, including her 1000th career assist.
Norwich dropped the first two sets of the day before erupting in the third and fourth set to even things up. In the fifth set the Cadets jumped out to a 3-1 lead before the Pioneers went on a four-point run, taking the lead.
Utica expanded the lead to five points, but Norwich battled back to make it 12-10. The Pioneers then used a pair of kills from Brianna Woods and a kill by Eleanor Cepiel to close out the contest for a Pioneer win.
Norwich will host Plymouth State in Andrews Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. before they travel to Salem State for a single contest on Saturday, Sept. 18. Their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Slate will begin on Friday, Sept. 24 when they take on Johnson & Wales.
