Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over Northern Vermont University at Johnson on Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
Norwich (1-1) scored in the 39th minute with senior midfielder Sydney Rocheville (Salem, Mass.) scoring her 12th career goal to provide the difference in the game.
NVU Johnson (0-1) controlled the play for the first 10 minutes with a couple of close opportunities, but freshman goalkeeper Kayla Dawson (Brooksville, Fla.) was equal to the task on every opportunity to thwart the Badgers.
The Cadets scored the game's lone goal late in the first half with Alexis Gaetz (Corinth, Vt.) finding a streaking Rocheville in the middle of the field with a pass.
Gaetz sent a pass over to Rocheville who steadied the ball with her right foot on the prep touch and then dribbled down in the NVU Johnson defensive third. Rocheville split a pair of defenders with her speed and then fired a right-footed shot in to the left corner of the net to beat NVU Johnson goalkeeper Grace Verner.
Norwich made the lead stand up from there as the Cadets outshot NVU Johnson 31-15. The Cadets had nine corner kicks to Johnson's two.
Dawson picked up her first collegiate win with six first-half saves before yielding the net to junior Kim Watt (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) for the second half. Watt preserved the team shutout with four more saves in the second half.
Sophomore Isabel Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) had a team-leading eight shots for Norwich.
