Box Score 2 NASHUA, N.H. - The Norwich University baseball team traveled to take on Rivier University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday.
The Cadets swept the Raiders for the second consecutive day, taking game one 7-0 and game two by a 10-1 final score.
In game one, NU got a dominant effort by freshman Matt Ingraffia (Lake Grove, N.Y.) on the mound in his first collegiate start. Ingraffia tossed a complete game five-hitter, striking out nine Rivier batters while surrendering just two walks. He improves to 1-1 on the year (his loss came in a relief appearance).
At the plate, Norwich wasted little time, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning before adding one in the third and two more in the fourth frame. Junior third baseman Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) continued his torrid start to the season going 1-for-3 with two RBI and a walk while freshman second baseman Nick Beavin (Montpelier, Vt.) went 1-for2 with two RBI and a walk as well. Senior first baseman Nate Gehringer (Bethlehem, Penn.) delivered the other RBI for the Cadets, going 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored.
In game two, sophomore PJ Morales (Bakersfield, Calif.) collected his first collegiate win on the mound, throwing six innings and allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks. He fanned four river batters and moves to 1-0 on the year. Senior Chris Henderson (Stafford, Va.) threw an inning of relief, allowing two hits and recording two strikeouts.
Rivier got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning but the lead would not hold as Norwich plated two runs in the second followed by one run in both the third and fourth innings. The Cadets rallied for seven additional runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Senior centerfielder Koby Foster (Estill Springs, Tenn.) had a stellar game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, four RBI and a run scored. Roberge picked up two more RBI while Gehringer added one. Freshman first baseman Ethan Aube (Riverhead, N.Y.) and freshman left fielder Owen Silk (North Haven, Conn.) also picked up RBI in the win while senior utility man CJ Davis (South Berwick, Maine) scored two runs and nabbed an RBI as well.
The Cadets outscored the Raiders 41-5 on the weekend.
Norwich improves to 4-2 overall and 4-2 in GNAC play while Rivier falls to 0-4 in both overall and conference play. The Cadets are next in action on Saturday, April 17th when they host Colby-Sawyer College in a GNAC doubleheader. Game times are set for noon and 2:30 p.m. at Garrity Field.
