Softball: Norwich sweeps Anna Maria in 2021 home opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University softball team made the most of its first home games in 714 days, sweeping Anna Maria College on Sunday afternoon at the NU Softball Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Freshman Annika Beebe (Marianna, Fla.) continued her monster week, hitting a walk-off RBI double, a home run, as well as picking up her first collegiate victory and save in the pitcher's circle to lead the Cadets to their first sweep of the season and snapping a six-game losing streak.

With the score knotted at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh in Game 2, Beebe walked it off with a towering RBI double that flew over the left fielder's head and one-hopped to the fence to score Liliana Rolfe (Plainville, Mass.) easily from second base with the game-winning run.

Beebe also threw a complete-game, seven-hitter and surrendered two earned runs while striking out five to earn her first collegiate victory.

Beebe led the Norwich (3-7, 2-4 GNAC) offense with three RBIs, knocking in runs in the bottom of the first and third on top of the walk-off winner.

Sophomore Kyle Harris (Barre, Vt.) also had the biggest hit of her young Norwich career with a two-out RBI single to centerfield that scored Maggie Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) from third and tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

In Game 1, junior Dara Kelly (Chesterfield, N.J.) and senior Elizabeth Niven (Londonderry, N.H.) each had two hits, while Rolfe had a hit and a run scored.

Beebe hit her third home run of the week with an inside-the-park home run after a sharp line drive to right field got under a diving Hailey Shaw and rolled all the way to the fence to allow Beebe to circle the bases for Norwich's second inside-the-park home run and fifth total home run of the season.

Sophomore Allison Northup (Westerly, R.I.) was brilliant in the pitcher's circle in Game 1. She went six innings, surrendering three hits and striking out six. However, she ran into trouble in the top of the seventh with the first two runners reaching prompting Norwich to bring in Beebe to try and get the three-out save.

Beebe struck out Saylor Costa and then walked Kassandra Register to load the bases up. Kaitlyn Snyder popped out in foul territory to Niven and then Samantha Dahill went down swinging to end the threat and clinch the 2-0 shutout victory. Beebe picked up her first collegiate save coming on in the seventh to close things out.

Norwich will host St. Joseph's (Maine) next Saturday, April 17 on the NU Softball Field at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in another crucial GNAC doubleheader. The Cadets will also travel to St. Joe's Maine on Sunday to complete the four-game series with the Monks.
