Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University baseball team hosted Rivier University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Garrity Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Cadets swept the Raiders, cruising to a 15-1 win in game one and a 9-3 win in game two, the first home baseball contests for the squad since 2019. Norwich did not trail at any point on Saturday.
In game one, senior CJ Davis (South Berwick, Maine) tossed a six-inning gem, allowing just one earned run on four hits and one walk. He fanned four batters to improve to 1-1 on the season. Fellow senior Chris Henderson (Stafford, Va.) threw an inning of relief allowing a hit and striking out two.
Offensively, NU plated three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and seven in the sixth. Rivier scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning.
Junior third baseman Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI while sophomore right fielder PJ Morales (Bakersfield, Calif.) was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman shortstop Ryland Richardson (Windsor, Vt.), senior designated hitter Nate Gehringer (Bethlehem, Penn.), freshman left fielder Owen Silk (North Haven Conn.), junior catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.) and freshman second baseman Nick Beavin (Montpelier, Vt.) all contributed an RBI apiece while senior center fielder Koby Foster (Estill Springs, Tenn.) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
In game two, junior pitcher Tanner Raymond (Southbury, Conn.) fanned a career-high 10 batters over six innings of work en route to his first win of the season. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Freshman Timber Russell (Randolph, Vt.) tossed a perfect inning of relief in the seventh, throwing just 12 pitches.
Roberge picked up where he left off in game one, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and one run scored. Morales put in another strong outing at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Foster and Gehringer collected the other RBI's for the Cadets. As a team, Norwich drew seven walks in game two.
McGee was stellar defensively behind the plate, catching two runners stealing second as well as recording a pickoff at third base in game one. In game two he caught one runner stealing and recorded another pickoff, this time at second base.
The Cadets improve to 2-2 on the season and 2-2 in GNAC play while the Raiders fall to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in conference. The teams will meet again on Sunday at Holman Stadium in Nashua, N.H. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
