Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. – The Norwich University men's ice hockey team shutout Castleton for the second time in 48 hours on Friday night with a 2-0 clean sheet over the Spartans at Spartan Arena.
Junior goalie Drennen Atherton (Winter Haven, Fla.) posted his second straight shutout, stopping all 16 shots he faced to improve to 2-0-0 in his Cadet career and help Norwich extend its NCAA all-division record shutout streak to 673:51.
Norwich (2-0-0) received goals from sophomore Niks Krollis (Riga, Latvia) and senior Carter Cowlthorp (Boissevain, Manitoba) en route to the victory.
After a scoreless first period, Krollis got Norwich on the board with assists from Philip Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden) and Braedyn Aubin (Woodstock, Ontario) to give the Cadets the only lead that they would need.
Cowlthorp added an empty-net goal with 21 seconds to go in the game off an assist from senior Scott Swanson (Wheaton, Ill.) to ice the game.
Norwich outshot Castleton 36-16 in the game.
Norwich will close out its three-game series on the week vs. Castleton on Saturday at 4 p.m. when it hosts the Spartans at Kreitzberg Arena.
