NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's ice hockey team continues the 2020-21 season this weekend with an away game at Conn. College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Norwich (5-0-0) has won five in a row with a three-game sweep of Castleton two weeks ago and then a sweep of Plymouth State last weekend.
After two straight shutouts to open the season, the Cadets did surrender their first goal dating back to Jan. 24, 2020 in the third Castleton game. Their NCAA all-divisions record shutout streak ended at 730:26, which was double the length of the previous NCAA Division III men's record.
However, Norwich picked right back up with its shutout streak, blanking Plymouth State twice last weekend in 2-0 victories at Kreitzberg Arena on Saturday and Sunday.
Conn. College is coming off a 4-4 tie and a 7-1 win vs. Becker last weekend. The Camels swept Albertus Magnus by scores of 6-2 and 6-2 the week prior.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday will mark the 25th all-time meeting between Norwich and Conn. College in men's hockey. The Cadets lead the all-time series 17-7 vs. the Camels. The two schools used to play every year in the old ECAC East/NESCAC Interlock scheduling agreement.
The last official meeting between the two schools came on Jan. 4, 2013 at the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament. The Cadets defeated the Camels 6-0 at Kreitzberg Arena. The two sides did play an exhibition game on Sunday, Feb. 28 at Kreitzberg Arena with Norwich taking a 6-2 win.
SCOUTING THE CAMELS
Conn. College (3-0-1) is led offensively by senior Matt Creamer, who has two goals and six assists for eight points on the season. Steven Senese has three goals and three assists for six points, while senior defenseman Brett Stirling has a team-leading six assists on the season.
Sophomore Brett Moccia has three goals and an assist for four points, while four different players are tied with two goals and two assists for four points.
In goal, a pair of freshmen have split the time for the Camels. Sean Dynan is 1-0-1 with a 2.88 goals against average and a .897 save percentage. Cam Fernandez is 2-0-0 with a 1.50 goals against average and a .952 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE CADETS
Norwich (5-0-0) is led by sophomore forward Philip Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden), who has a goal and five assists for six points through three games. Sophomore Niks Krollis (Riga, Latvia) has had a breakout campaign so far, leading the team with three goals and tallying one assist to date for four points.
Senior Felix Brassard (St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec) continues his remarkable even scoring with two goals and three assists for five points. In his 91 career games played, Brassard has 38 goals and 39 assists for 77 points.
Freshman defenseman Logan vande Meerakker (Dieppe, New Brunswick) has a goal and three assists, while junior Maxime Borduas (St. Cesaire, Quebec) has four assists. Junior Michael Green (Montreal, Quebec) is tied for the team lead with three goals on the season.
In goal, junior Drennen Atherton (Winter Haven, Fla.) is 4-0-0 with a perfect 0.00 goals against average and a 1.000 save percentage. He has stopped all 99 shots he has faced so far this season in wins over Plymouth State and Castleton. Sophomore Andrew Albano (Hamilton, Ontario) has a .960 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average.
