Women's Hockey: Moell, Baptiste lead Norwich past Plymouth, 6-1

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team won its fifth straight game and secured the weekend sweep of Plymouth State with a 6-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.

Junior forward Maddie Moell (Clarence Center, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Mikah Baptiste (Ottawa, Ontario) each had a goal and two assists to lead the red-hot Norwich offense in the victory.

Freshman goalie Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) made it 3-for-3 in her first three collegiate starts, stopping 19 shots to pick up the victory.

Norwich (5-1) took the lead at the 12:50 mark of the first period with a rocket one-timer blast on the power play from sophomore defenseman Molly Flanagan (Lutz, Fla.).

Aimee Headland (Nottingham, United Kingdom) and Carley Sedlar (Howell, Mich.) picked up assists on the goal.

Baptiste and Moell hooked up for the first time in the game at the 19:10 mark of the first period to increase the lead to 2-0. Moell made a tremendous play with a strong fore check to lift the stick of a Plymouth State player and steal the puck behind the net. She then fed the puck out front of the net to a crashing Baptiste, who buried it on a one-timer past Plymouth State goalie Amelia Julian for her first goal of the season.

Norwich extended the lead to 3-0 at the 2:23 mark of the second period with Taylor Tom (Kenora, Ontario) scoring on a wrist shot from the blue line off a pretty faceoff win setup play from Baptiste and Moell.

Plymouth State (2-4) got on the board at the 12:32 mark of the second period right as a penalty expired for Norwich with Isabella Borbridge scoring on a shot from the point that Clark got a piece of, but it deflected off her body and into the back of the net to cut the Norwich lead to 3-1. Lauren McNeil and Addie Swanson picked up assists for Plymouth State.

Norwich regained the three-goal lead with Ann-Frederique Guay (St. Lambert-de-Lauzon, Quebec) scoring on a rebound at the 19:10 mark of the second period off assists from Flanagan and Baptiste.

The Cadets added two more goals in the third with Moell and Sedlar scoring at the 5:37 and 19:54 mark of the third period. Kayla Goleniak (Canton, Mich.) and Morgan Tefft (Redwood City, Calif.) got on the scoresheet in the final 20 minutes with assists.

Norwich outshot Plymouth 27-20 in the game. Julian made 21 saves in goal for Plymouth State.

The Cadets return to action next weekend with a home-and-home series vs. Trinity. NU travels to Hartford on Saturday, before hosting the Bantams on Sunday at 1 p.m.
