Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team avenged a one-goal loss from a day prior, reversing the script in a 2-1 win over Castleton University on Sunday afternoon at Spartan Arena.
Norwich (1-1) got goals from sophomore Ann-Frederique Guay (St. Lambert-de-Lauzon, Quebec) and junior co-captain Kayla Goleniak (Canton, Mich.), while freshman goalie Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) picked up her first collegiate victory in her first collegiate start to lead the Cadets to the win.
The Cadets struck first blood at the 10:20 mark of the second period with Guay scoring her first of the year off assists from KC Herne (Akwesasne, Quebec) and Maddie Moell (Clarence Center, N.Y.).
Castleton (3-2-1) responded at the 17:38 mark of the second period with Kaitlin Bardellini scoring an unassisted goal to knot the game up heading into the second intermission.
Norwich took the lead for good at the 3:33 mark of the third period with Goleniak scoring her first of the year off assists from Samantha Benoit (Bow, N.H.) and Ingrid Holstad-Berge (Stavanger, Norway).
Clark made 21 saves for the Cadets as Castleton outshot Norwich 22-19 in the game. NU handed Kirsten DiCicco the first loss of her collegiate career after she made 39 saves the day prior to help the Spartans spoil the Cadets' season opener.
Norwich will continue its four-game series against Castleton next Friday and Saturday with the Cadets hosting the Spartans at 5 p.m. in Kreitzberg Arena on Friday, March 5, before traveling to Rutland to take on the Spartans again on Saturday, March 6 at 1 p.m.
