Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's ice hockey had six different goal scorers in a 6-2 exhibition victory over Conn. College on Sunday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena in its first game against an intercollegiate opponent in 358 days.
Freshman Brent Rickett (Portland, Maine), sophomore Niks Krollis (Riga, Latvia) and senior Michael Korol (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) each scored for the first time in a Cadet uniform to lead Norwich to the victory.
Seniors Carter Cowlthorp (Boissevain, Manitoba) and Felix Brassard (St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec), as well as junior Noah Williams (Cortland, N.Y.) each scored goals as well, while senior goalie Ben Nelson (York, Maine) made 18 saves to earn the victory.
Rickett opened the scoring at the 18:59 mark of the first period, firing a low wrist shot past Conn. College starting goalie Cam Fernandez to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead. Freshman Logan vande Meerakker (Dieppe, New Brunswick) picked up the assist on the goal.
Conn. College tied the game at the 4:37 mark with power play goal off a tip by Brett Stirling in the high slot off an initial shot by Kyle Shero. Colin Stevens picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
Norwich seized full momentum just before the midway point of the second period, scoring three goals in a span of 2:05. Cowlthorp opened the scoring binge with a highlight-reel goal on incredible individual effort to strip a Conn. College player of the puck, catch it in his glove. He then took a stride and deked out Fernandez with a backhand fake before pulling it back over to his forehand and stuffing it under the outstretched pad of the Camel goalie.
A little less than two minutes later Brassard increased the lead to 3-1 with a backhand rebound goal off an initial shot from the point by Gabriel Chicoine (St. Dominique, Quebec). Maxime Borduas (St. Cesaire, Quebec) picked up the secondary assist after feeding the puck to Chicoine from the half boards.
Just 12 seconds after Brassard's goal, Korol was slashed across his hands while on a clean breakaway to draw penalty shot attempt.
Korol skated in and faked out Fernandez on the forehand before drawing it back over to his backhand and slipping the puck through Fernandez's five-hole to make it 4-1 Norwich.
Krollis capped the second period scoring with 37 seconds left in the frame with a snipe bar down off the cross bar from right faceoff circle to extend the Norwich lead to 5-1.
Conn. College got a goal back at the 11:02 mark of the third period with Sam Stone cleaning up a rebound into a wide open net before Nelson could move across the crease. Stirling picked up the assist on the goal with an initial shot from the point that was saved by Nelson.
Norwich finished off the scoring in the game with four seconds left as Williams rifled a shot into the corner of the net from the middle of the slot off a pass from the goal line by Krollis.
