Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Norwich University men's ice hockey team closed its first semester schedule with a 2-2 overtime draw at Lake Champlain-rival Plattsburgh State on Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Stafford Ice Arena.
Freshman forward Isaac Chapman (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia) scored for the second-straight game, while fellow rookie Clark Kerner (Kansas City, Kan.) tallied his team-leading eighth goal of the season to lead the Cadets' offense. Senior goalie Drennen Atherton (Winter Haven, Fla.) made 35 saves to settle for his fourth tie of the season.
After a scoreless first 20 minutes, Chapman opened the scoring at the 4:34 mark of the second period by flipping a shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle past Anthony Del Tufo to give Norwich a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Patrick O'Neal (Indiana, Pa.) poked the puck back to Chapman off a scramble in front of the Norwich net after Plattsburgh failed to clear the puck out of the zone.
Norwich (6-1-4, 3-1-3 NEHC) extended its lead to 2-0 at the 10:23 mark with Kerner banging home a shot into a wide-open net off a 2-on-1 rush. Senior Noah Williams (Cortland, N.Y.) set it all up by stickhandling around a defender and drawing Del Tufo over the near post before Williams dropped the puck back to Kerner who was crashing through the slot and he buried the puck to add to his team-leading total.
Plattsburgh (6-4-2) got one back at the 14:04 mark of the second period with Adam Tretowicz scoring. The Cardinals then tied the game with 2:55 left as Jacob Modry found the back of the net off an assist from Luk Jirousek for the final goal of the game.
Neither side was able to score in 3-on-3 overtime in the extra five-minute session.
Atherton helped give the Cadets a chance for the victory with his second-highest save total of the season. Plattsburgh outshot Norwich 37-21 in the game.
