Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's basketball team played their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the season, in their opening matchup of the Hockenbury Classic, Friday evening against Colby-Sawyer, 73-57.

Freshman Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) continued her hot streak picking up her third double-double of the year with 30 points and 14 points, while shooting 57.1 percent from the field. Rachel Botala (Grand Isle, Vt.) also pitched in with 10 points while registering two steals and Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) registered 10 boards while adding nine points in the contest.

Colby-Sawyer opened things up on their first possession, with Emily Parent connecting on a three-point jumper. After Brewster knocked down two from the free-throw line, Brittany Graham (Rye, N.H.) weaved a pass through the defense to find McGinn open for the lay-in.

The Chargers battled to a 10-10 score before Erika Thomas (Burlington, N.C.) nailed a three, that MacKenzie Moore (Georgia, Vt.) followed up with a layup, after a steal by Alexis Matte (Lebanon, N.H.). Norwich closed out the first frame with a 18-14 advantage over Colby-Sawyer.

After the Chargers closed the lead to one after a Marissa Holt bucket, Norwich scored nine straight points, closing out the half holding a 41-31 lead. Norwich outscored the Chargers by six in the quarter, 23-17.

Norwich would not look back as they continued to build upon their lead outscoring Colby Sawyer 14-10 in the third quarter, and 18-16 in the fourth.

Norwich (3-3, 1-0 GNAC) evens their record with the win. They will face off against Wellesley in their closing matchup at the Hockenbury Classic at 3 p.m. The Cadets will then close out the final two games of the semester traveling to Eastern Nazarene on Thursday, Dec. 9 and Johnson & Wales on Sunday, Dec. 12.
