Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's ice hockey team scored a season-high eight goals, including six on the power play as the Cadets overwhelmed Johnson & Wales in an 8-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.
Norwich (2-0-1, 1-0-1 NEHC) got a pair of goals each from freshman Clark Kerner (Kansas City, Kan.) and junior Braedyn Aubin (Woodstock, Ontario) as the Cadets cruised to the victory to stay unbeaten on the season.
Senior captain Noah Williams (Cortland, N.Y.) notched three assists, while freshman Bryan O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist.
Freshman Mike MacKenzie (Londonderry, N.H.) scored his first collegiate goal, while sophomores Patrick O'Neal (Indiana, Pa.) and Evan Googins (Braintree, Mass.) each scored goals as well.
Sophomore Andrew Albano (Hamilton, Ontario) stopped 13 shots to earn the victory in goal for the Cadets.
Johnson & Wales was whistled for the first 11 penalties of the game and Norwich cashed in on six of those chances to overwhelm the Wildcat penalty killers all game.
O'Mara scored on a rebound, off assists from Williams and Devon Becker (Langley, British Columbia) to make it 1-0 Norwich at the 10:27 mark of the first period.
O'Neal and Brett Ouderkirk (Monkland, Ontario) hooked up for the next goal, capitalizing on a turnover in the neutral zone with a 2-on-1 goal to make it 2-0 Cadets at the 12:42 mark.
Kerner cashed in on the power play at the 13:57 mark of the first period with Williams and Joe Nagle (Weymouth, Mass.) picking up assists to make it 3-0 heading into the first intermission.
Kerner scored again on the power play just 38 seconds into the second period and then Aubin followed with back-to-back goals at the 1:31 mark and 17:41 mark of the middle frame to make it 6-0. Mackenzie picked up a goal with a deflection off his skate on a shot from the point by Logan vande Meerakker (Dieppe, New Brunswick). Ouderkirk picked up the secondary assist.
Goggins capped Norwich's scoring late in the third off assists from Callum Jones (Burlington, Ontario) and Mackenzie.
Johnson & Wales broke up Albano's shutout with 1:04 left in the game with Declan Dennehy scoring the goal.
Norwich outshot Johnson & Wales 38-14 in the game. The Cadets will hit the road for their game away from Kreitzberg Arena after two home exhibitions and three regular season games. The Cadets will face Skidmore on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. and then Castleton on Nov. 13 at 4 p.m.
