BOSTON - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team opened up the 2021-22 season with a 6-1 victory over UMass Boston on Friday night at the Edward T. Barry Ice Arena in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.

Junior forward Ann-Frederique Guay (St. Lambert-de-Lauzon, Quebec) scored twice, while classmate Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass.) notched three assists to lead the Norwich offense in its first regular season of the season and first NEHC league contest since February 2020.

Sophomore Saige Biddle (Middletown, Del.) and freshman Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, New Brunswick) scored their first collegiate goals, while Mikah Baptiste (Ottawa, Ontario) and Melianne Reynolds (Sherbrooke, Quebec) chipped in with goals as well. 

Senior goalie Alexa Berg (West Fargo, N.D.) made 22 saves to pick up the victory in goal. 

Norwich (1-0-0, 1-0-0 NEHC) scored twice in the first period with Biddle and Baptiste scoring at the 4:57 and 12:46 mark to take a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Guay scored the next two goals in the second period at the 1:15 and 16:12 mark, with both coming on primary assists from Masotta. 

Jackson scored her first collegiate goal at the 18:54 mark off an assist from Biddle to make it 5-0 Cadets heading to the second intermission. 

Reynolds scored a power-play goal at the 10:03 mark to make it 6-0 Norwich off assists from Baptiste and Masotta.

UMass Boston (0-2-0, 0-1-0 NEHC) broke up the shutout at the 16:14 mark of the third period with Margeaux Butters scoring off assists from Liz Kramp and Rachal Burum. 

Norwich will take on Johnson & Wales at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the New England Sports Village in Attleboro, Mass.
