Men's Hockey: Norwich skates to 3-3 OT tie with UMass Boston

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The No. 1-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team scored two extra attacker goals in the final 1:23 of regulation to salvage a 3-3 tie with UMass Boston on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena in each team's New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) opener.

Norwich (1-0-1, 0-0-1 NEHC) went to overtime for the second straight game to start the season and third overall after its second exhibition game vs. Curry went to overtime as well.

The Cadets took a 1-0 lead just 1:05 into the game with junior forward Philip Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden) scoring his second goal of the season off assists from Jason Galotti (Hanover, Mass.) and Cale List (Petawawa, Ontario).

However, UMass Boston (1-1-1, 0-0-1 NEHC) took over from there, scoring three straight goals with one in each period to build up a 3-1 lead until Norwich's late-game theatrics.

Joe Petruzzella scored UMass Boston's first goal of the game at the 11:36 mark off assists from Dakota Concannon and Owen Bourdow to tie the game at 1-1.

The Beacons took their first lead of the game at the 9:21 mark of the second period with Jeffrey Skinner scoring scoring on a tip off an initial shot by Nolan Barret from the point. Ryan Rowland picked up the second assist after sending a defense to defense pass along the blue line.

Concannon made it 3-1 UMass Boston at the 7:26 mark of the third period with an unassisted tally after he intercepted a failed Norwich clear attempt in the Cadets' defensive zone. He coralled the puck along the boards and then walked out from the half boards and cut through the slot before burying a wrist shot top shelf to give the Beacons a two-goal lead.

Norwich pulled Drennen Atherton (Winter Haven, Fla.) for the final two minutes of the game in search of the equalizing goals. Senior captain Noah Williams (Cortland, N.Y.) put some life in the Cadets and the home crowd with a tip goal in front off an initial shot by Clark Kerner (Kansas City, Kan.) to cut the deficit to 3-2. Devon Becker (Langley, British Columbia) recorded his team-leading fourth assist on the goal as well.

Kerner sent the roof off of Kreitzberg with 10 seconds to go, scoring the game-tying goal on a rebound in front of the net after his initial shot was saved by UMB's Sam Best. Kerner jammed home the rebound for his first collegiate goal and tie the game up at 3-3. Becker had the primary assist and Williams had the secondary assist.

Neither side was able to score in the 3-on-3 shootout and both teams had to settle for a point in the league standings.

Atherton made a career-high 39 saves in goal for the Cadets. Best stopped 26 shots for the Beacons.

Norwich will return to action on Saturday, November 6 at 4 p.m. when the Cadets host Johnson & Wales at Kreitzberg Arena.
