Men's Basketball: Cadets Drop Their First Game of the Season, Lose to Castleton in Closing Game of Granite City Shootout

BARRE, Vt. – The Norwich University men's basketball team's four-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday against the Spartans of Castleton, 89-80.

The Cadets had five players score in double-digits in the contest. Spencer Conatser (Reno, Nev.) and Owen Liss (West Suffield, Conn.) led all Norwich players with 17 points each with Conatser going 5-of-7 from distance, and Liss completing 7-of-8 attempts from the field. Donovan Lewis Jr. (Savannah, Ga.) scored 12 points, Kyle Booth (Northfield, Vt.) added 11, and Jalen Olivero (Holyoke, Mass.) had 10 in the loss.

After both teams were held scoreless through the first 2:49 of play, Joe Alamprese scored for the Spartans and Booth responded with a bucket of his own to evening things out, sparking an 11-0 run.

The Cadets held an 20-13 lead with 8:04 remining in the first half, before Alex Blackmoore hit a three, that he followed up with another made jumper. After Olivero hit a jumper of his own, Remy Brown knocked down another three-pointer to cut the Norwich lead down to one.

Norwich and Castleton were knotted up at 33-33 after John Walsh made a pair of free throws, before Conatser nailed a three-point jump shot to put the Cadets back up by three. After another pair of free throws were made by the Spartans' Darrell Hardge, Liss came back on the other end to hit a layup with two seconds on the clock in the first half.

Mid-way through the second half, Castleton was even things up after trailing by 11 with 15:21 left in the half. The Cadets and Spartans battled back and forth before Castleton started to break away with 4:05 left in the contest after Hardge hit two shots and a free throw giving the Spartans a lead that they would not relinquish.

Norwich (4-1, 0-0 GNAC) will travel to Henniker, N.H. to take on New England College in their final game, before hosting the Hockenbury Classic. They will open the Hockenbury with their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener against Colby-Sawyer on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m.
