Women's Hockey: Norwich rallies to edge Castleton 4-3 in OT

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Freshman Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, New Brunswick) scored 1:12 into overtime to lift the Norwich University women's ice hockey team to a dramatic 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Castleton University on Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.

Jackson beat Castleton University goalie Kirsten DiCicco to the right side of the goal after she was sprung on a breakaway by sophomore Melianne Reynolds (Sherbrooke, Quebec) during 3-on-3 overtime. The goal was Jackson's second of the season and none bigger in the young career in the Maroon & Gold to help extend Norwich's NEHC-unbeaten streak to 54 straight games.

Norwich (4-1-0, 4-0-0 NEHC) trailed 3-2 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. The Cadets pulled starting goalie Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) for an extra skater on a faceoff deep in Castleton's zone. NU won the facoeff with Reynolds winning it back to Mikah Baptiste (Ottawa, Ontario), who slid the puck over to Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass.) and then Masotta fired the puck into traffic in front of the net and the puck found the back of the net through the screen to level the score at 3-3.

Castleton (3-2-0, 1-1-0 NEHC) looked like it had scored the game-winning goal at the 16:12 mark of the third period with Darby Palisi jamming home a rebound after Emily Harris created a turnover behind the NU net and had her initial shot saved by Clark to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead.

Norwich went 2-for-4 on the power play with Reynolds and Aimee Headland (Nottingham, United Kingdom) scoring power-play tallies as Norwich rallied from three different one-goal deficits to complete the comeback.

Palisi had a hand in all three Castleton's goals, including the secondary assist on Courtney Gauthier's goal to open the scoring at the 11:22 mark of the first period. Gauthier fired a shot from the point that found its way through traffic in front of the net to give the Spartans the first lead of the game. Ryanne Mix had the primary assist.

Norwich responded with a goal with 1.1 seconds left in the first period with Reynolds scoring off assists from Baptiste and Headland for her second goal of the season.

Castleton took the lead again at the 4:54 mark of the second period with Harris scoring on a terrific individual effort to make a move around a NU defender and then slide the puck through Clark's five-hole on the backhand.

Headland scored on a pretty one-timer setup from Ann-Frederique Guay (St. Lambert-de-Lauzon, Quebec) and Masotta to tie the game 2-2.

Clark stayed perfect in her Norwich career, improving to 7-0-0. She made 13 saves for the Cadets as they outshot Castleton 48-15. DiCicco made 44 saves for Castleton in the loss.

Norwich will host Trinity (Conn.) next Saturday at 3 p.m. in non-conference action at Kreitzberg Arena. Saturday will also be Norwich women's hockey's Alumni Weekend.
