Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Sophomore defenseman Joe Nagle (Weymouth, Mass.) scored with 2:14 left in overtime to lift the Norwich University men's ice hockey team to a 3-2 win over Salve Regina on Saturday night at Kreitzberg Arena.
Nagle scored a 4-on-3 power play goal, sniping the top-left corner of the net with a shot that banked off the post and into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal and sent a raucous Norwich home crowd home happy.
Nagle took a pass from senior defenseman Devon Becker (Langley, British Columbia) at the top of the right faceoff circle and buried the snap shot past Nicholas Latinovich. Freshman forward Clark Kerner (Kansas City, Mo.) picked up the secondary assist on the goal after dropping the puck back to Becker at the point.
Becker tallied an assist on all three Norwich goals as the transfer from Bryn Athyn College had a memorable debut in the Maroon & Gold.
Senior forward Noah Williams (Cortland, N.Y.) and junior forward Philip Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden) tallied goals as well for the Cadets.
After a scoreless first period, Salve Regina (0-1-0) struck first with John MacLean scoring off a face-off win play from Tyler Carangelo at the 4:54 mark of the middle frame. MacLean snuck the puck past Norwich senior goalie Drennen Atherton (Winter Haven, Fla.) to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead after Carangelo won the puck over to his left.
Norwich responded at the 12:18 mark of the second period with Elgstam lighting the lamp on the power play off assists from Becker and Braedyn Aubin (Woodstock, Ontario). Elgstam's goal sent over 2,000 pairs of socks donated by Darn Tough Vermont out onto the ice that will be donated to local Central Vermont organizations to help those in need this winter.
Williams gave Norwich its first lead of the game at the 15:06 mark of the second period, scoring off an assist from Becker to make it 2-1 Cadets.
Salve Regina pulled its goalie with 1:30 to go in the game and ended up tying the game with the extra attacker as John MacLean found the back of the net off assists from George Sennott and Ethan DeStefani.
Norwich outshot Salve Regina 39-25 in the game. Atherton made 23 saves in the game to improve to 6-0-0 in his career at Norwich.
Norwich will look to keep its momentum rolling next weekend when it hosts UMass Boston on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. and then Johnson & Wales at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6 in its first two New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) games of the season.
