FORT PIERCE, Florida. – The Norwich University baseball team opened its slate of Florida games with a doubleheader against Monmouth (Ill.) on Saturday.

The Scots swept the Cadets with a 7-0 win in game one and a 9-2 victory in game two.

In game one, Monmouth jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Scots added one run in the second and three more in the third to take a 7-0 lead.

The Cadets' bats could not answer and the Scots held on for the 7-0 final. Sophomore Jon Grasso (Haddam, Conn.) took the loss for NU to fall to 0-1 on the season. He allowed seven earned runs on seven hits and five walks over two and two-third innings.

The Norwich bullpen allowed only two combined hits as senior Nick Landis (South Berwick, Maine), junior Chris Henderson (Stafford, Va.) and freshman Zachery Jackson (Buckeye, Ariz.) all tossed at least an inning in relief.

In game two, Monmouth struck first again, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Norwich scored its first run of the day in the top of the fourth inning after senior third baseman Brendon Profita (New Milford, Conn.) led off the frame with a triple. He then came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 2-1. 

This score held until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Scots plated seven runs for a 9-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, junior shortstop Jacob Parizo (Groton, Conn.) delivered an RBI single that plated freshman pinch-hitter Abel Oropeza (Whittier, Calif.) and made it 9-2.

Senior CJ Davis (South Berwick, Maine) took the loss for NU after allowing four earned runs on six hits in five innings of work. He walked four batters while striking out five.

The Cadets are now 2-4 on the season and are back in action on Sunday, taking on Franciscan at 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
