Box Score 1 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Norwich University softball team got back to its winning ways on Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Clarks Summit and La Roche at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
Norwich (4-2) mercy-ruled both of its opponents, downing Clarks Summit 8-0 in five innings in the first game and then taking down La Roche 9-0 in six innings in the second game.
In Game 1, Dara Kelly (Chesterfield, N.J.), Katie Reid (Gold Canyon, Ariz.), Makenna Wade (Pensacola, Fla.), Kyle Harris (Barre, Vt.) and Madelyn Folcik (Wilmot, N.H.) each had two hits to lead the offense. Wade and Reid each had two RBIs.
Three Norwich pitchers also combined to throw a no-hitter in the victory. Senior Brittany Vandergroef (Lodi, N.J.) picked up the win after going three innings and striking out five. Sophomore Adele Cousland (Amherst, Mass.) and Melina Romero (Desert Ridge, Ariz.) each came on for an inning of relief to complete the team no hitter in the fourth and fifth innings.
Norwich pounded out 13 hits and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with Reid tripling to the fence to score Kelly and Elizabeth Niven (Londenderry, N.H.). The Cadets never looked back from there en route to their third victory of the season and broke the two-game skid.
Norwich scored a run in every inning but the second, including a big four-run fifth inning to complete the mercy-rule win. Wade had the big blow with a two-run double to score Romero and Reid.
In Game 2, Wade went for 4-for-4 with four RBIs in one of her finest offensive performances of her remarkable four-year career. Fellow senior Kaylee Blanchard (Worcester, Mass.) had three hits and two runs scored with a RBI as well, whule Kelly added two hits and two runs scored.
Vandergroef went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and also picked up the win on the mound after going four innings and giving up four hits while striking out three. Romero came on to throw two shutout innings of relief to preserve the shutout.
Norwich had 14 hits to La Roche's seven. The Cadets handed La Roche its only loss of its seven-game spring break trip with the victory.
