Baseball: Norwich Splits With Geneva

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team took on Geneva College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday.

The Cadets and the Golden Tornadoes split the twinbill with NU taking game one 10-5 and Geneva claiming game two 14-8.

In game one, NU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by sophomore designated hitter Cameron Chamberlain (Marlborough, N.H.). Geneva plated a run in the top of the third to tie the game 1-1 before the Cadets came to the plate in the home half of the frame.

Sophomore catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.) roped an RBI single through the left side to reclaim the one run lead at 2-1.

Geneva was able to knot the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth before NU blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Freshman second baseman Abel Oropeza (Whittier, Calif.) got the rally started with a sacrifice fly to right field. Junior center fielder Koby Foster (Estill Springs, Tenn.) then came around to score on a passed ball. Senior right fielder Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.) roped an RBI single to right field, followed by fellow senior third baseman Brandon Profita (New Milford, Conn.), who stayed red-hot at the plate with an RBI double to center.

Chamberlain and sophomore first baseman Hunter Lavigne (Charlton, Mass.) delivered RBI singles and Foster launched a two-run double to center to cap the rally and take a 10-2 lead. Six of the eight runs were scored with two outs.

Geneva scored three times in the top of the seventh, but that is as close as the score would get.

Junior Chris Henderson (Stafford, Va.) picked up the win in relief for the Cadets to improve to 1-0 on the season. He tossed one and two-third innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on no hits and two walks. He struck out two batters.

Seven Cadet batters finished the game with at least one RBI, while eight batters registered at least one hit.

In game two, Norwich got on the board first with an RBI fielder's choice by Chamberlain for a 1-0 lead. Geneva rallied for five runs in the home half of the first to take the 5-1 advantage.

In the top of the second, NU plated another run as freshman second baseman Ryland Richardson (Windsor, Vt.) came around to score on a wild pitch for a 5-2 score. Geneva rallied for four more runs in the second for the 9-2 lead. The teams exchanged a few more runs across the remaining innings for the 14-8 final score.

Freshman left fielder Jeremy Carrick (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) finished the game with three RBI and one single. Richardson and Foster each chipped in a double.

The Cadets now stand at 5-5 on the season while the Golden Tornadoes move to 3-4. Norwich is next in action on Thursday for a doubleheader against the University of Northwestern Minnesota. Those games are set for 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
