Men's Basketball: Early Foul Trouble Plagues Norwich in Loss to Regis

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's basketball team faltered in the later stages of its matchup against Regis College, falling to the Pride, 86-64, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Andrews Gym.

Norwich (5-16, 1-6 GNAC) started the game off well as sophomores Donovan Lewis Jr. (Savannah, Ga.) and Caleb Casinas (Aiea, Hawaii) staked the Cadets to an early 6-2 lead.

Regis (7-14, 3-4 GNAC) countered by throwing the ball into the paint to big man Marc Trinidad. The Cadets had their hands full with the athletic big man as Lewis Jr. quickly found himself with two fouls after just five minutes of play resulting in an early exit as the Pride grabbed a 12-6 lead following a 10-0 run.

The teams traded buckets for the remainder of the first half with the visitors retaining the slimmest of leads right until the 3:10 mark. Lewis Jr. checked back into the game and scored the equalizer knotting the game at 27-27, but unfortunately picked up a critical third foul.

Regis' Dmitri Rosa hit from deep just before the one-minute mark to give the Pride their biggest lead of the half at 34-27. Casinas followed suit with a pull-up jumper just before the half to send the Cadets into the break trailing 34-29.

Norwich did an excellent job pushing the tempo in the first half registering eight points off of fast-break opportunities compared to zero for the Pride. The visitors, however, capitalized off Norwich turnovers scoring 13 points off of Cadet miscues.

Regis quickly extended its lead to 10 points as Devante Thompson canned a three-pointer to put the Pride up 41-31 at the 18:27 mark of the second. The visitors held that lead throughout the majority of the period.

However, with Lewis Jr. having fouled out of the game and his replacement, senior Josh Dumay (Framingham, Mass.), also in foul trouble, the Cadets were vulnerable inside. Eventually, the inside-out game started clicking for the Pride and the visitors hit several late triples to put the game out of reach.

The teams turned the tables on each other in the second half as Regis tallied 12 fast-break points to none for the Cadets, while Norwich earned the edge in points off of turnovers.

The Pride had four players notch double-digit points with Trinidad leading the way with a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double. Thompson matched his scoring output of 19 points while thieving away three errant passes. Rosa connected for 5-of-7 three-point attempts en route to 15 points while Cam Wilkins led all reserves with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Casinas paced the Norwich offense with 19 points while junior forward Kyle Booth (Northfield, Vt.) tallied 14 points and a team-high six rebounds. Dumay led the Cadet bench players with nine points and five rebounds.

Norwich will take to the hardcourt again on Wednesday when it hosts Suffolk in GNAC play at 6:30 p.m. Regis will also be hosting a GNAC tilt on Wednesday when it squares off against top-ranked St. Joseph (Conn.) at 6 p.m.
