Men's Basketball: Balanced Scoring Fuels Norwich's Win Over Rivier

Box Score

NASHUA, N.H. – The Norwich University men's basketball team had six players score in double figures en route to a narrow 88-83 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road victory over Rivier University at the Muldoon Gymnasium.

The win catapulted the Cadets to 6-18 on the season and gave them a 2-8 mark in the GNAC in advance of their season finale on Saturday against Johnson & Wales (R.I.) at 1 p.m.

Norwich sextet of double-digit scorers was led by senior forward Josh Dumay's (Framingham, Mass.) 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and 6-of-8 showing at the free-throw line. Sophomore forward Donovan Lewis Jr. (Savannah, Ga.) chipped in with 16 points while senior forward Dan Bertrand (Saugus, Mass.) registered his first career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Junior forward Kyle Booth (Northfield, Vt.) played well for the Cadets as he added 12 points while both sophomore guards Samuel-Noah Osarenkhoe (Stockholm, Sweeden) and Caleb Casinas (Aiea, Hawaii) ended their nights with 10 points each.

Norwich got a jump start on the scoring in the first five minutes of the game as it sprinted out to an 11-3 lead with a combined 9 points from Casinas and Booth.

The Cadets held that lead until the 6:10 mark when Rivier evened up the score at 25-25 following two Issaiah Chappell free throws.

The teams traded buckets back-and-forth for the remainder of the half until the last minute of play when the Cadets outscored the Raiders 7-3 to take a 44-37 lead into halftime.

A quick three out of the break by the Cadets' Bertrand extended the visitors' lead to 10 points which they were able to hold throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half.

With the score still at 72-62 at the 8:58 mark, the Raiders chiseled the deficit down to 74-72 thanks to a 10-2 run over the next three minutes.

The Cadets countered with a 6-0 run powered by five points by Lewis Jr. to re-establish its lead at 80-72 with 3:42 to play.

Rivier again made it a two-point game at 83-81 as it battled back once again within striking distance with just under a minute to play. However, the Cadets hit 5-of-6 of its free throws down the stretch to ice the win.

Norwich shot 47.6 percent from the floor while holding the Raiders to just 36.4 percent. Most of that advantage came in the paint as the Cadets outscored Rivier in the paint, 40-26.

Norwich will wrap up the 2019-2020 season on Saturday afternoon as they celebrate Senior Day where it will honor their three outgoing seniors in Dumay, Bertrand, and guard Connor Miller (Sydney, Australia).
