Box Score DELHI, N.Y. – The Norwich University women's basketball team closed out its non-conference portion of the schedule with a 69-50 road loss to SUNY Delhi on Monday evening at Floyd L. Maines Arena.
Norwich (8-16) outrebounded the Broncos by a 58-37 margin but was unable to use that to its advantage shooting just 27.6 percent from the field. The team's typically stingy defense allowed SUNY Delhi to hit on 40.6 percent of its attempts from the floor overall and from beyond the arc. The Cadets did outscore the Broncos 9-2 on second-chance opportunities and in the paint by a 16-14 margin.
Junior guard Riley Bennett (Hopkinton, N.H.) led the Cadets with her second career double-double which included 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Senior forward KristieAnn DeSilvio (Chelmsford, Mass.) added 10 points while junior forward Kailynne Frederick (Adams, Mass.) led the team with 13 rebounds in addition to her eight points.
At the outset of the game, Bennett nailed a three-pointer on the Cadets' third offensive possession to tie the game at 3-3. From there the Broncos took and never relinquished control using a 7-0 run to jump ahead 10-3. The hosts would outscore the Cadets 8-5 through to the end of the quarter to take an 18-8 edge into the second period.
Bennett and sophomore guard Sandra Carlsten (Bandhagen, Sweden) each scored five points in the second quarter helping to reduce the lead to eight points two different times, but the Broncos would benefit from 13 bench points to increase its lead to 33-21 at the half.
DeSilvio caught fire in the third quarter scoring all 10 of her points on 5-of-7 shooting, however, SUNY Delhi countered with a balanced attack from five different contributors to increase its lead to 49-33 through three quarters.
Norwich produced its best offensive showing in the final stanza scoring 17 points, including 11 from its reserves. The Broncos again had an answer as they notched 20 points including 12 from Samiaya Salley who was a perfect 4-for-4 from the distance to sew up the win.
Norwich will be scoreboard watching on Tuesday with a vested interest in the outcome of the matchup between Lasell and Emmanuel. An Emmanuel win would help the Cadets lock up a postseason berth while a Lasell victory would require the Cadets to pull out a win in its season finale against Johnson & Wales at home this Saturday with the team's senior game slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
