Box Score BOSTON - Senior goalie Tom Aubrun (Chamonix, France) became the new career shutouts leader after making 37 saves for his 13th shutout in a 5-0 victory over UMass Boston on Friday night at the Edward T. Barry Rink in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.
Aubrun passed Braeden Ostepchuk '18 for the all-time lead with his sixth shutout of the season, which also tied Ryan Klingensmith '10 for the most shutouts in a single season.
Senior Taeron Lewis (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and junior Coby Downs (Montclair, Calif.) each had a goal and an assist to lead the offense as Norwich stretched its unbeaten streak to 11 straight games.
Scott Swanson (Wheaton, Ill.), Gabriel Chicoine (St. Dominique, Quebec) and Carter Cowlthorp (Boissevain, Manitoba) each scored a goal as well to round out the Cadets' offensive leaders.
After a scoreless first period, Cowlthorp broke the ice on the scoring at the 3:31 mark with his third goal of the season on a rebound off an assist by Lewis. Lewis' initial backhand shot was saved by UMB goalie Sam Best, but Cowlthorp crashed the net and was first to the rebound to shove it over the goal line and give Norwich a 1-0 lead.
Chicoine made it 2-0 Norwich at the 6:24 mark with a tap-in goal on the back door off a pass from Brett Ouderkirk (Monkland, Ontario) with his fourth goal of the season. Philip Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden) picked up the second assist on the goal.
Norwich added three more insurance tallies in the third period with two of the goals coming on the power play to cruise to the victory.
Swanson scored his third goal of the season off a pretty setup from Downs and Felix Brassard (St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec) to make it 3-0 at the 1:11 mark of the third period. Downs scored unassisted at the 15:37 mark of the second period, sniping a shot over the glove of Best for his eighth goal of the season.
Lewis capped the scoring at the 18:15 mark of the third period with another power play goal off an assist from TJ Dockery (Lockport, N.Y.). Lewis jammed home a rebound in the crease for his fifth goal of the year.
Norwich outshot UMass Boston 41-37 in the game and swept the season series from the Beacons after a 5-3 win in Northfield earlier this season. Friday's win marked Norwich's fourth in the last nine meetings at the Barry Rink, which has proved to the toughest road rink for Norwich over the last decade.
Norwich (17-2-2, 12-1-1 NEHC) will now face the only team hotter than them in the country on Saturday at 4 p.m. when it travels to take on No. 9-ranked Babson. The Beavers are unbeaten in 15 straight and beat Castleton 6-1 on Friday night.
The Cadets lead second-place Babson by four points heading into Saturday's showdown. The Beavers have one game in hand however with four games to play on the final two weekends of the regular season to the Cadets' three.
