Men's Basketball: Costly Turnovers Cause Norwich to Stumble against Colby-Sawyer

Box Score

NEW LONDON, N.H. – After a successful run of games taking good care of the ball, the Norwich University men's basketball team committed too many turnovers in its 90-63 loss to Colby-Sawyer College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Wednesday evening.

Colby-Sawyer improved to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in the GNAC while Norwich fell to 3-15 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Norwich was led by junior forward Kyle Booth (Northfield, Vt.) who poured in 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the floor. Sophomore guard Caleb Casinas (Aiea, Hawaii) tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Senior forward Dan Bertrand (Saugus, Mass.) led the reserves with eight points off the bench.

In the early moments of the game, it appeared this would be a classic back-and-forth dual as the teams exchanged the lead six times in the first four and a half minutes. However, with the score knotted at 11-11, the hosts used a 7-0 run to build up an 18-11 lead and then never looked back en route to victory.

Colby-Sawyer shot 57.6% from the floor in the first half and 7-of-13 (53.8%) from beyond the arc to take a 52-33 at the break. Norwich shot 52.2% in the frame but was handicapped by 13 turnovers that led to 16 Colby-Sawyer points.

Norwich did a better job guarding the perimeter in the second half holding the Chargers to just 3-of-15 from deep, but the Cadets did not have an answer for the hosts in the paint as the Chargers made 17-of-35 shot attempts overall in the second. Norwich shot just 28.6 % from the field in the second half despite getting to the free-throw line and making 10-of-13 of its attempts.

Colby-Sawyer outscored the Cadets 46-18 in the paint and won the battle of the boards 37-30.

The Cadets will look to rebound on Saturday with a 1 p.m. home game against Saint Joseph's of Maine.
