Volleyball: Cadets Split Home Tri with MCLA and Dean

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's volleyball team hosted MCLA and Dean College in a tri-match on Saturday at Andrews Hall.

The Cadets fell to the Trailblazers 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-15) before sweeping the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-8) to split the day. MCLA topped Dean 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-12) in the neutral site matchup.

In the first match, the Trailblazers jumped out to a 19-15 lead in set one before the Cadets cut it to 19-18. The Trailblazers rallied to take a 22-18 lead before the Cadets once again cut the deficit, this time to 22-20. MCLA recovered and held on for the 25-22 final.

In the second set, the Cadets held a 24-21 lead but couldn't close the door on the Trailblazers as MCLA rallied for five straight points and a 26-24 win.

MCLA used a key six point run in the third set to turn a 10-6 lead into a 16-6 edge that wouldn't be relinquished on the way to a 25-15 final and a 3-0 sweep.

Junior middle hitter Julia Schroeder (Victorville, Calif.) and senior Michele Zummo (Highland Mills, N.Y.) led Norwich with six kills on the match while freshman right side Sarah Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) paced the team with 20 assists. Junior Kathryn Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) collected five kills while sophomore Addison Hall (Apple Valley, Calif.) registered four. Senior libero Brianna Dawson (Katonah, N.Y.) tallied 11 digs and one service aces. 

In the second match, the Cadets capitalized on a six point run that ballooned a 11-6 lead into a 17-6 advantage. Norwich didn't look back and took the 25-15 final.

In set two, NU opened on a 6-0 run and led by as many as 10 points on two separate occasions en route to the 25-16 win.

In the third and final set, Norwich opened on an 8-0 run and led by as many as 17 points before registering the 25-8 final.

Freshman outside hitter Maggie McNeil (Gilford, N.H.) led the Cadets with seven kills on the match while Hall registered six and Zummo recorded five. Sophomore libero Olivia Brown (Rye, N.H.) recorded 24 digs and two service aces in the victory.

The Cadets now stand at 4-2 on the season while the Trailblazers improved to 3-3 and the Bulldogs dropped to 0-3. Norwich is next in action on Wednesday, September 11th for a home matchup against Salem State at 6:00 p.m.
