Baseball: Monks Silence Cadet Bats

STANDISH, Maine – The Norwich University baseball team traveled to take on Saint Joseph's College of Maine in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

The Monks swept the Cadets with an 8-0 win in game one and an 11-2 victory in game two.

In game one, Saint Joe's jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning. The Monks added three in the second inning for a 7-0 edge through two innings.

SJC plated an additional run in the bottom of the fifth for the 8-0 final.

Senior center fielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.), junior second baseman Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.) senior first baseman Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) and freshman catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.) all had singles in the loss.

Freshman Jon Grasso (Haddam, Conn.) took the loss for the Cadets to fall to 0-1 on the season. He allowed seven runs on eight hits and four walks over four innings of work. He struck out a season-high five batters.

Freshman Derek Kroese (Lakeville, Mass.) pitched well in relief, allowing one run on one hit and one walk in two innings of work.

In game two, Saint Joseph's took another early lead, leading 1-0 after one inning and 5-0 after two.

Norwich struck for a run in the top of the third as Lynch reached firs base on a throwing error, allowing junior left fielder Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) to score and cut the lead to 5-1.

The Monks rallied once again for five in the bottom of the third and one more in the fourth for an 11-1 advantage. Norwich was able to plated one more run on an RBI groundout by Barlow in the sixth for the 11-2 final.

Junior Nick Landis (South Berwick, Maine) fell to 0-3 on the year after allowing nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits and two walks in two and one third innings. He struck out one batter on the day.

Freshmen relievers Nathan Rosalez (Brownsville, Texas) and Cale Bombardier (Williston, Vt.) both tossed one inning of shutout relief in the loss. 

Senior shortstop Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) played the 100th game of his career in game two of the twinbill.

After the sweep the Cadets stand at 4-14 overall and 2-6 in conference play while the Monks improve to 22-8 overall and 8-2 in the GNAC.
