PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Norwich University men's ice hockey team suffered its first loss of the season with a 2-1 overtime defeat to Middlebury College on Friday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena in the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut semifinals.

Middlebury (4-1-0, 3-1-0 NESCAC) scored 1:45 into overtime with Zach Shapiro scoring the game-winning goal on a scrum in the crease off assists from Alex Heinritz and Emack Bentley to lift the Panthers to the victory in the 157th all-time meeting between the two schools.

Norwich (7-1-0, 6-0-0 NEHC) dominated the first period, outshooting Middlebury 19-2, but couldn't solve Panther goalie Brian Ketchabaw in the opening frame. 

Middlebury opened the scoring at the 11:36 mark of the second period with Matt Danner scoring off assists from Tyler Capello and Mitchell Allen. 

The Cadets finally got on the board with 43 seconds left in the second period with junior Felix Brassard (St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec) scoring his team-leading ninth goal of the season off assists from Maxime Borduas (St. Cesaire, Quebec) and Coby Downs (Montclair, Calif.).

Senior goalie Tom Aubrun (Chamonix, France) made 19 saves, suffering his first loss of the season to fall to 7-1-0.

Norwich will look to rebound on Saturday in the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut consolation game vs. the loser of UW-Eau Claire and Plattsburgh State at 4 p.m.
