Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Norwich University baseball team traveled to take on Johnson & Wales (RI) on Saturday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference regular season action.
The Wildcats swept the Cadets after rallying for a 7-6 win in game one and a resounding 15-2 final in game two.
In game one, Norwich jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI single by senior second baseman Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) and a dropped third strike with the bases loaded.
The Wildcats rallied for a run in the bottom of the first and another in the third to tie the game 2-2.
In the top of the sixth the Cadets got some more offense on a two-run single by junior center fielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) and a throwing error to take a 5-2 lead. JWU rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the late 7-5 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Norwich got one run back on an RBI groundout by sophomore pinch-hitter Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.), but couldn't tie the game, losing 7-6.
Freshman Luke Johansen (Doylestown, Penn.) took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season. He allowed six earned runs on 11 hits in five innings of work. He walked three batters and fannes three also.
In game two, the Wildcats scored nine runs in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the fourth for a 12-0 lead.
Lynch got the Norwich bats going with an RBI single in the top of the fifth and one batter later junior pinch hitter Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 12-2.
The Wildcats nabbed three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 15-2 final.
Norwich now stands at 6-21 overall and 6-6 in the GNAC. The Cadets are next in action on Sunday, April 29th for a GNAC twinbill at home against Saint Joseph's College (Maine). The game times are set for noon and 2:30 p.m.
