Softball: Simmons sweeps Cadets in GNAC DH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BOSTON - The Norwich University softball team dropped its second straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader and fourth game overall on Tuesday evening with a pair of losses to Simmons College.

Norwich (5-9, 3-7 GNAC) out hit Simmons (14-10, 8-4 GNAC) in both games, however the Sharks took advantage of timely hits, including a late rally in Game 2 with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk away with both victories. Simmons took Game 1, 11-5 behind four RBIs from Dom Ortiz. The Sharks then rallied from a 8-4 deficit in Game 2 to walk off with the bottom of the seventh victory.

Sophomores Katie Reid (Gold Canyon, Ariz.) and Makenna Wade (Pensacola, Fla.) each tallied two hits in Game 1. Wade had two RBIs, while Reid, Naomi Rinaldo (Middlefield, Conn.) and Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) each had one. Sophomore Felicia Armell (North Ferrisburgh, Vt.) scored two runs for the Cadets in the opening ganme to lead the team.

On the mound, Oliver went six innings giving up 11 hits and six earned runs, while walking seven and striking out three.

In Game 2, Norwich had a huge eight-run top of the fifth inning to turn a 4-0 deficit into an 8-4 lead. However, Simmons answered with a run in the bottom half of the fifth and then tacked on four more in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the dramatic victory and secure the sweep.

Senior Sarah Perry (New Bedford, Mass.) and junior Madison Miller (Long Lake, N.Y.) each notched three hits in the nightcap, but it wasn't enough despite the Cadets outhitting the Sharks 13-7 in the game. Every starter except for one had a hit for Norwich with Armell, Rinaldo, Oliver, Miller, Reid and Kaylee Blanchard (Worcester, Mass.) all picking up RBIs in the big fifth inning.

Perry took the loss on the mound giving up seven earned runs on seven hits and five walks, while striking out three.

Norwich continues its busy week when it travels to Univ. of St. Joseph for another doubleheader on Thursday in Hartford. The Cadets then return home to host Lasell and Anna Maria on Saturday and Sunday with both doubleheaders set to start at 1 p.m.
