Box Score 2 VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team opened its slate of Spring Break contests with a doubleheader against Geneva College on Friday.
The Cadets were swept by the Golden Tornadoes, falling 5-4 in game one and 103- in game two.
In game one Norwich struck first in the top of the second inning as freshman shortstop Jacob Parizo (Groton, Conn.) drew a bases-loaded walk for a 1-0 lead. Junior centerfielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) followed with an RBI fielder's choice and sophomore Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.) lifted an RBI single to centerfield for a 3-0 edge.
Geneva responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to knot the score at 3-3 before senior second baseman Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) delivered an RBI groundout in the top of the fourth for a 4-3 Cadet lead.
The Golden Tornadoes responded with a run in the bottom of the inning and the game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the seventh inning. Geneva walked-off with a sacrifice fly and a 5-4 win.
Junior Jake Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. He tossed six and two-third innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks. He struck out three batters as well.
Lynch and senior DH Ed Gates (Griswold, Conn.) finished the game with two hits apiece.
In game two Geneva put up three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Cadets struck back with one run in the bottom of the frame. Caldwell continued his hot day at the plate with an RBI double to left field to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Golden Tornados scored one run in the top of the third and added five in the top of the fourth to balloon their lead to 9-1. Norwich was able to get two runs back in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore third baseman Brandon Profita (New Milford, Conn.) and junior first baseman Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) each delivered RBI doubles to make it 9-3.
Geneva plated an additional run in the top of the sixth for the 10-3 final.
Sophomore Nick Landis (South Berwick, Maine) was saddled with the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. He surrendered four earned runs on five hits in two and two third innings on the mound. Landis walked one batter while striking out two.
The Cadets fall to 0-4 on the season and are next in action on Sunday for a doubleheader against Bethany (W.V.). Those games are set for 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
