Box Score 2 VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team concluded its spring break trip with a doubleheader against Gettysburg College on Saturday.
The Bullets swept the Cadets with an 11-6 win in game one and a 17-2 final in game two.
In game one, Gettysburg plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning and four runs in the bottom of the second for a 6-0 lead.
Norwich got one run back in the top of the third on an RBI single by junior second baseman Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) that plated junior catcher Chris Leach (Vergennes, Vt.) to make it 6-1. The Bullets responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and one run in the fifth for a 9-1 lead before the Cadets mounted a rally in the top of the sixth.
Norwich scored four runs in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI triple by senior first baseman Ed Gates (Griswold, Conn.), and RBI double by sophomore left fielder Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.), and RBI single by freshman shortstop Jacob Parizo (Groton, Conn.) and an RBI groundout by sophomore third baseman Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.).
This rally cut the deficit to 9-5, but the Bullets quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to stretch their lead out to 11-5.
Norwich scored a run on a fielding error in the top of the seventh, but couldn't rally further and fell 11-6.
Sophomore Andrew Fisher (Tewksbury, Mass.) fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss after allowing six earned runs on eight hits and one walk through one and two-third innings. He struck out one batter.
Doherty and Leach both had multi-hit games for Norwich in the defeat.
In game two the Bullets broke open a scoreless game with nine runs in the top of the second inning for a 9-0 lead.
Norwich would plate its only runs of the contest in the bottom of the frame on RBI doubles by sophomore third baseman Brandon Profita (New Milford, Conn.) and sophomore right fielder Oliver Brown (Waldoboro, Maine) to make the score 9-2.
Gettysburg added two runs in the third, two in the fourth and four in the fifth for the 17-2 lead, which reflected the final score.
Junior Matt Paze (Carlisle, Mass.) took the loss for Norwich to fall to 0-2 on the season. He allowed six earned runs on five hits over one and one-third innings of work.
Junior center fielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) and Fisher each collected two hits in the loss.
The Cadets are next in action on Saturday, March 24th when they travel to take on Husson University in a non-conference doubleheader. Those games are set for noon and 3:30 p.m.
