Baseball: Cadets Drop Doubleheader to Aggies

LAWNWOOD PARK, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team took on Delaware Valley on a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

The Aggies swept the Cadets with a 7-2 win in game one and a 6-4 victory on game two.

In game one, the Aggies took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added two more runs in the bottom of the third for a 3-0 lead.

The Cadets rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut it to a one run game on an RBI single by freshman right fielder Nate Gehringer (Northampton, Penn.) and an RBI groundout by freshman shortstop Jacob Parizo (Groton, Conn).

Delaware Valley responded with four runs in the home half of the sixth and shut down the Norwich bats in the top of the seventh for the 7-2 win.

Junior Jake Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss for the Cadets to fall to 0-3 on the season. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits. He fanned six batters in the contest.

In game two, the Aggies took another early lead with three runs in the top of the third and another in the top of the fourth for a 4-0 edge.

The Cadet offense exploded for four runs in the home half of the fourth inning to tie the game 4-4. Sophomore pinch-hitter Eamon Smith (Rollinsford, N.H.) scored on an error to cut the deficit to 4-1 before junior second baseman Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) delivered an RBI single to center that plated sophomore third baseman Brandon Profita (New Milford, Conn.) to make it 4-2. Lesco and freshman center fielder Koby Foster (Estill Springs, Texas) came around to score on another fielding error to tie the game. 

Delaware Valley added a run in the top of the fifth and the top of the seventh to pull away with the 6-4 victory.

Senior Ed Gates (Griswold, Conn.) gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks to fall to 0-2 on the season. He struck out two batters.

Norwich falls to 0-10 and will take on Gettysburg on Saturday, March 17th in their final doubleheader of the Florida swing. Those games are set for 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
