Box Score 2 FLEMINGTON, N.J. – The Norwich University baseball team opened the season with a non-conference doubleheader at Centenary University on Saturday.
The Cyclones swept the Cadets with an 8-3 win in game one and a 17-7 victory in game two.
In game one, Norwich jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as sophomore left fielder Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) connected on a one-out double to right field. He then came around to score on a combination of a wild pitch followed by a throwing error for the Cadet lead.
The Cyclone bats came to life in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs and adding six more runs in the bottom of the fourth frame for an 8-1 lead.
Norwich plated two more runs in the top of the seventh after sophomore third baseman Brendon Profita (New Milford, Conn.) drew a leadoff walk. One out later Doherty stepped to the plate and delivered his second extra base hit of the day, a two run homer over the right field fence to make it 8-3.
Junior Jake Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss for the Cadets to fall to 0-1 on the year after tossing three innings of six-hit ball. He allowed two runs (both earned) and struck out two batters.
Sophomore Andrew Fisher (Tewksbury, Mass.) threw 2 2/3 innings of relief allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
In game two, the Cadets again took an early lead, this time in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Eamon Smith (Rollinsford, N.H.) that plated fellow sophomore, second baseman Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.) for a 1-0 lead.
NU added two runs in the top of the second on a two-RBI double by Dayos that scored Doherty and sophomore catcher Jake Godbee (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and stretched the lead to 3-0.
In the top of the third the Cadet lead ballooned to 7-0 thanks to and RBI groundout by sophomore left fielder CJ Davis (South Berwick, Maine) and RBI singles by Godbee and Doherty. Junior shortstop Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) added an RBI walk as well.
The Cyclones then rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third, 11 in the bottom of the fifth and three in the bottom of the sixth for the 17-7 final.
Dayos ended the game three-for-four for NU.
Senior Ed Gates (Griswold, Conn.) took the loss for the Cadets in a relief effort after allowing eight runs (five earned) on seven hits over 2/3 of an inning. He surrendered one walk and struck out one batter.
The Cadets fall to 0-2 on the season while the Cyclones improved to 2-0. Norwich is next in action on Friday, March 9th, taking on Geneva College in Vero Beach, Florida. Those games are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
