Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's basketball team took home a 70-68 victory over the AMCATS of Anna Maria College on Tuesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play in Andrews Hall.
The game went back and forth through the first half as Norwich outscored Anna Maria 22-11 in the first quarter, but the AMCATS came storming back to outscore the Cadets 28-14 in the second to head to halftime trailing NU by a mere 3 points.
Towards the end of the game, Norwich found themselves in an eerily similar situation to the last showdown with Anna Maria a mere ten days ago when the AMCATS hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to defeat the Cadets 58-57. Johanna Burke hit a layup with 44 seconds left to tie the game up at 68, but Shyann Josler (Thetford Center, Vt.) came down the court and hit a clutch up and under layup to give the Cadets a slim advantage.
After a full timeout, Anna Maria inbounded and found Kristina Russo for a clean look at three points and the game, but she couldn't find the bottom of the net. Burke managed to come out of the scrum under the basket with the offensive rebound and forced up a tightly-contested layup, but that too went in and out, and Norwich walked away with the slimmest of victories by a 70-68 final score.
Shyann Josler led the way for the Cadets with 22 points, 7 assists, and 4 rebounds while co-captain Arianna Harrison (Vernon, Vt.) racked up yet another double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Naomi Rinaldo (Middlefield, Conn.) provided solid minutes off the bench, collecting 8 points and 5 rebounds.
Kristina Russo had a game-high 29 points thanks to a 9-19 night from 3-point land, as the AMCATS shot an astounding 46 times from behind the arc. Norwich managed to outpace Anna Maria in rebounds (41-35), points in the paint (36-10), fast break points (6-0), and field goal percentage (41.7%-35.8%).
Tonight marks the final home game for the Cadets during the regular season, as they'll close out their year on the road at Castleton University on Thursday and Saint Joseph's of Maine on Saturday. The win bumps the Cadets up to 10-13 on the year and a 7-8 mark within the conference.
