Women's Hockey: Norwich nips Adrian, 3-2 in East-West Hockey Classic Consolation

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team rebounded from its first loss of the 2017-18 season with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over No. 4-ranked Adrian College on Monday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.

Brynn Wopperer (Amherst, N.Y.), Kelley Madden (Novelty, Ohio) and Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) each scored to account for Norwich's offense on the day, while Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) made 15 saves to lead the Cadets (12-1-1) to the victory in their first ever meeting with Adrian.

Schwenzfeier scored the game-winning goal at the 11:32 mark of the third period to break a 2-2 tie with a power play goal for her sixth tally of the season. Schwenzfeier took an indirect pass off the boards from Kim Tiberi (Raleigh, N.C.) and skated in from the left. Schwenzfeier crossed in front of the crease and potted the puck in the left corner of the net with an Adrian defender draped all over her.

Adrian (9-4-1) took a 1-0 lead at the 3:29 mark of the first period with Maggie Mitter scoring a power play goal from Brooke Schembri. Mitter beat King from the middle of the slot as she crashed the net off a feed from behind the goal by Schembri.

Wopperer scored her third goal of the season at the 14:42 mark of the second period with Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.) and Alyssa Hulst (Scarborough, Maine) picking up the assists.

Adrian regained the lead at the 3:11 mark of the third period with Rose Krasofsky scoring her 11th goal of the season off assists from Hannah Dalrymple and Mitter.

Madden scored her first of the year to tie the game up at the 5:54 mark of the third period, slapping a loose puck in the slot past Adrian's Kate Turner off assists from Nicole Goebel (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and KC Herne (Akwesasne, N.Y.).

King improved to 10-1-1 on the year with the victory. Turner dropped to 8-4-1 with the loss. Norwich outshot Adrian 20-17 for the game.

Schwenzfeier was named to the East-West Hockey Classic All-Tournament team. She was joined on the team by Elmira's Devyn Gilman and Katie Granato, as well as Plattsburgh State's Meghan Kraus, Brooke Wolejtko and Baye Flanagan. Plattsburgh State's Courtney Moriarty was named the MVP of the tournament after scoring two goals and adding an assist in the Cardinals' 3-0 victory over Elmira College in the championship game.

Norwich returns to action on Monday, January 15 when it hosts New England College at 4 p.m. in Kreitzberg Arena.
