Box Score 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Norwich University baseball team travelled to take on Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
The Falcons eked out a 5-4 walkoff win in game one while the Cadets earned a split with a 6-5 win in game two.
In game one the Cadets charged out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as junior infielder Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) knocked a one-out double. Fellow junior Eddie Gates (Griswold, Conn.) then stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run for a 2-0 Norwich edge.
The Falcons came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to knot the game 2-2 before the Cadets reclaimed the lead in the top of the third.
Freshman infielder Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.) ledoff the inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI single by senior third baseman Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) for a 3-2 lead.
Albertus Magnus responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 edge. The Cadet bats tied the game in the top of the fifth as sophomore outfielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) hit a one-out double then Sirois delivered a clutch, two-out RBI single to plate Lynch and tie the contest 4-4.
The Falcons won the game in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a walkoff solo homer by senior Andrew Scully for a 5-4 final.
Senior Kaleb Smith (Dover Foxcroft, Maine) took the loss for the Cadets to fall to 0-3 on the season. He tossed 6 and one third innings and allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. He struck out three batters on the outing.
In game two the Cadets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead once again, using a two-out rally to do so. Lynch scored on a throwing error and freshman Eamon Smith (Rollinsford, N.H.) roped an RBI triple that scored Gates (who reached on the earlier error).
Norwich added two more runs in the top of the second on an RBI single by Lynch and a bases loaded walk drawn by Gates for a 4-0 lead.
The Falcons rallied for five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-4 lead, but it would be their last offensive flourish.
The Cadets trailed until the top of the seventh when Sirois delivered a one-out single. Gates and Eamon Smith then ripped back-to-back RBI doubles to give Norwich a late 6-5 edge.
Freshman Andrew Fisher (Tewksbury, Mass.) picked up the win for the Cadets after shutting down the Falcon bats down the stretch, including the seventh frame. He allowed no runs on just three hits over four innings of work. He allowed one walk and fanned four batters to improve to 1-0 on the season.
With the split the Cadets sit at 6-14 overall and 1-3 in GNAC play while the Falcons stand at 6-12 overall and 3-1 in conference action.
Norwich is next in action on Tuesday, April 11th at Castleton University. That non-conference nine-inning contest in slated for 4:00 p.m.
