Baseball: Cadets Sweep AMCATS, Improve to 6-4 in GNAC

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team hosted Anna Maria College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Garrity Field.

The Cadets swept the AMCATS with an 8-0 win in game one and a come-from-behind 2-1 victory in game two.

In game one Norwich took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice by senior catcher Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.). The Cadets added another run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman Eamon Smith (Rollinsford, N.H.) for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth sophomore right fielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to stretch the lead to 4-0. Sophomore shortstop Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) chipped in an RBI single and senior third baseman Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field for a 6-0 advantage.

Sophomore right fielder Dustin Spatz (Bernville, Penn.) added an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth to cap the scoring.

Senior Kaleb Smith (Dover Foxcroft, Maine) continued the streak of hot Norwich pitching with a strong six inning performance. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out one batter. With the win he improves to 1-3 on the season. 

In game two the Cadets had to rally, down 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth senior center fielder LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) lifted a two-out RBI double to deep center field to score freshman second baseman Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) (who singled earlier in the frame).

In the bottom of the sixth of a 1-1 game sophomore right fielder Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) delivered a sacrifice fly to center to score Sirois from third and give Norwich its first lead of the game, 2-1.

Freshman Andrew Fisher (Tewksbury, Mass.) shut down the AMCAT bats in the top of the seventh to cap a complete-game effort and improve to 2-2 on the season. He allowed one run (unearned) on six hits and one walk while striking out six.

Norwich improves to 12-17 overall and 6-4 in GNAC play with the sweep while Anna Maria falls to 7-29 overall and 0-12 in conference.

The Cadets have now won six of their last seven games. The 12 wins is the most since the 2004 season (Norwich posted a 13-15-1 record).

Norwich is next in action on Tuesday, April 25th for a non-conference doubleheader against Plattsburgh State. Those games are set for 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at Garrity Field.
