Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team hosted Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Garrity Field.

The Wildcats took game one 8-1 but the Cadets got another gem of a start from senior Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) to take game two 4-0.

In game one the Wildcats lept out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a two-run homer by sophomore Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.).

Johnson & Wales added a run in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead before Norwich plated a run.

In the bottom of the sixth junior second baseman Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) delivered an RBI groundout that scored senior third baseman Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) to make it 7-1.

The Wildcats added another run in the top of the seventh for an 8-1 lead and the Cadets went down in order in the bottom of the frame to end the contest.

Senior Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) took the loss for Norwich to fall to 2-5 on the season. He allowed six earned runs on nine hits and one walk over four innings of work. He fanned five batters.

In game two Farquharson turned in his second-straight complete game shutout effort allowing just two hits and four walks while striking out 10 batters to improve to 3-3.

Freshman designated hitter Andrew Fisher (Tewksbury, Mass.) got the Cadet offense started in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly that plated sophomore right fielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth senior centerfielder LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) singled to right field, advancing freshman second baseman Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) to third. Doherty then came around to score on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead. Thomas later advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error to make it 3-0.

Sophomore shortstop Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as he crossed the plate from third base on a wild pitch.

The Cadets record now stands at 10-17 after the split and 4-4 in GNAC play. The Wildcats are now 15-14 and 5-5 in conference.

Norwich is next in action on Sunday, April 23rd hosting Anna Maria College in a GNAC doubleheader. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
