Softball: JWU sweeps Norwich in GNAC opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Norwich University softball team was swept by two-time defending GNAC champion Johnson & Wales University on Sunday afternoon.

Norwich (0-10, 0-2 GNAC) fell 7-0 and 8-2 to the Wildcats in their first games in the Northeast after opening its season last week in Florida.

Freshman Makenna Wade (Pensacola, Fla.) hit her first collegiate home run with a two-run shot in the top of the sixth inning in Game 2 to account for Norwich's lone runs on the day. She briefly cut the lead to 5-2, but JWU (12-5, 4-0 GNAC) responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away.

Freshman Katie Reid (Gold Canyon, Ariz.) had two hits to lead the offense in the first game.

Sophomore pitchers Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) and Rachel Johnson (Stockbridge, Vt.) each took losses on the day on the mound as they split the innings in both games.

Norwich will look to get its first win of 2017 when it travels to Suffolk on Thursday, April 6 for a GNAC doubleheader slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
