Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team hosted Rivier University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Garrity Field.

The Cadets swept the Raiders with a 16-2 win in game one and a 6-0 victory in the second contest thanks to a career outing from senior pitcher Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.).

Rivier took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one before Norwich scored 16 unanswered runs (including four in the bottom of the first).

Senior third baseman Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) collected an RBI single in the first frame then came around to score on a passed ball while sophomore Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) ripped a two-run double for the 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the third Norwich got RBI singles from senior catcher Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) and senior centerfielder LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas).

The Cadets blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning after a leadoff home run by junior second baseman Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) and a three-run triple from sophomore shortstop Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.). The lead stood at 11-2 after the inning had concluded.

Pedley added another RBI single in the bottom of the sixth with sophomore right fielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) chipping in a two-run double and Lesco adding an RBI groundout.

Senior Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) picked up the win for the Cadets after a solid, complete game effort. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over seven innings of work. He walked just one batter while fanning 11 to improve to 2-4 on the season.

In game two Farquharson was absolutely dealing, registering a career-high 15 strikeouts while allowing just five hits over seven shutout innings. He walked one batter and improves to 2-3 on the season. He struck out the side in the first and fourth innings.

Freshman third baseman Eamon Smith (Rollinsford, N.H.) broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth with his first career home run, a two-run shot, to give the Cadets a 2-0 lead.

Lesco and Sirois added RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth and Barlow added an RBI double in the sixth. Thomas also recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice to make it 6-0.

Thomas stole four bases on the day, two in each contest.

Norwich improves to 8-16 overall and 3-3 in GNAC play while the Raiders fall to 1-19 and 0-6 in conference.

The Cadets are next in action on Tuesday, April 18th when they travel to take on Southern Vermont College at 3:00 p.m.
