Baseball: Cadets Swept by Bullets in Florida Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team took on Gettysburg College in a non-conference doubleheader at Historic Dodgertown on Friday.

The Bullets swept the Cadets with scores of 9-4 in game one and 9-3 in game two.

In game one Gettysburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Cadets rallied for two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead.

Junior second baseman Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) singled to right field to leadoff the inning and sophomore outfielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) delivered a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Senior first baseman Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) then sacrificed to advance both runners. Freshman third baseman Eamon Smith (Rollinsford, N.H.) then ripped a line drive single to left field, allowing Caldwell and Lynch to score.

The game remained in the Cadets' favor until the Bullets exploded for four runs in the top of the fifth, three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to open up a 9-2 lead.

Norwich mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff single by Lynch was followed by a Whaley single. Smith then delivered the Cadets' third straight single to load the bases. A balk and then a fielding error allowed two Norwich runs to score to make it 9-4.

Senior Kaleb Smith (Dover Foxcroft, Maine) took the loss for Norwich to fall to 1-3 on the season. He allowed five runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk over four and 2/3 innings of work. He struck out one batter.

In game two Gettysburg again struck early and often with three runs in the first inning, third inning and fourth inning for a 9-0 advantage.

Norwich provided some offense in the top of the fifth inning as junior first baseman Leland Goodenough (Brookfield, Vt.) ledoff the frame with a double. Freshman catcher Connor Baker (Brookfield, Vt.) followed with a single to put runners on the corners. A flyout later freshman pinch-hitter Brandon Profita (New Milford, Conn.) grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to cut the game to 9-1. Freshmen DH Andrew Fisher (Tewksbury, Mass.) and second baseman Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) delivered back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 9-3 but that is as close as the Cadets would come.

Sophomore Matt Paze (Carlisle, Mass.) allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks over two innings of work. He struck out one batter and falls to 0-1 on the year.

The Cadets now stand at 3-9 on the season. The doubleheader served as the final games of the Florida trip for Norwich. The Cadets are next in action on Saturday, March 25th at Husson University for a non-conference doubleheader. Those games are slated for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
