Box Score 2 VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team played Marywood University in a non-conference doubleheader at Historic Dodgertown on Thursday.
The Cadets picked up their first sweep of the season, claiming game one 9-3 over the Pacers and taking a 6-2 final in the second contest.
The Norwich offense had a slow start, allowing one run in the top of the first inning, but soon made a comeback in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs. With the bases loaded, freshmen Andrew Fisher (Tewksbury, Mass.) hit a triple on a line drive out to left field, scoring sophomore Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.), senior LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas), and sophomore Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.).
In the bottom of the fourth, Norwich scored two additional runs, increasing the lead to 6-1. With one out, Barlow smacked a double, allowing freshmen Jake Godbee (Ormond Beach, Fla.) to score from second base. A ground ball hit by Lesco plated Barlow to score a second run for Norwich.
Marywood answered with two runs in the top of the fifth, cutting Norwich's lead down to 6-3. The Cadets were ready to respond, however, and scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Eddie Gates (Griswold, Conn.) singled to left field, allowing fellow junior Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) to score. Gates would come around to score following a sacrifice fly by Thomas.
Every Norwich batter that stepped to the plate collected at least one hit in the contest.
Senior starter Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) did not allow Marywood to score through the rest of the game. Whaley allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks. He struck out nine batters and improves to 1-2 on the season.
In game two Norwich scored their first run in the in the top of the fourth and scored three additional runs that same inning, giving them a 4-1 against the Pacers. Caldwell singled to left field, allowing Fisher to score. Soon after with the bases loaded, senior Brandon Pedley (Northfield, VT) hit a double, scoring Lynch, Caldwell, and freshman CJ Davis (South Berwick, Maine).
The Pacers answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth, to which Norwich responded by scoring an additional two runs in the top of the sixth. Pedley hit a single to right field, allowing Caldwell to score. Thomas grounded out, and plated Gates.
Senior Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, VT) allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks over five and 1/3 innings of work. He fanned eight Pacers to move to 1-2 on the campaign.
The Cadets now stand at 3-7 on the season and will take on Gettysburg College on Friday in their Florida finale. That non-conference doubleheader has start times of 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
