Box Score 2 FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team opened its spring break trip with a doubleheader against Delaware Valley University on Saturday.
The Rams swept the Cadets after taking game one 15-4 in five innings and winning game two 4-2.
In game one Norwich jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning after senior outfielder LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) drew a leadoff walk. He then stole second base and third base on separate plays before scoring on an RBI fielder's choice by senior third baseman Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.).
The Cadets added to their lead in the top of the second as sophomore outfielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) ledoff the frame with a single. Lynch stole second base and advanced to third on a dropped third strike. Freshman second baseman Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) then delivered an RBI single to right field to give Norwich a 2-0 lead.
The Rams answered with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game and four more in the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead. The Delaware Valley bats stayed hot, plating nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to open up a 15-2 lead.
The Cadets rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by freshman pinch-hitter Eamon Smith (Rollinsford, N.H.) and RBI fielder's choice by Lynch but ultimately fell 15-4.
Senior Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) took the loss for Norwich to fall to 0-2 on the season. He allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks. He struck out eight batters.
In game two it was Delaware Valley that jumped out to the early lead of 2-0 after the first inning and 3-0 after three before the Norwich bats stirred.
Freshman infielder Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.) singled to leadoff the bottom of the third inning. Lynch then delivered a bunt singe before junior Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) sacrificed both of them into scoring position. Dayos then scored on a passed ball and freshman Andrew Fisher (Tewksbury, Mass.) hit an RBI single to right to make it 3-2.
The game remained a one-run contest until the Rams plated an insurance run in the top of the seventh before taking the 4-2 final.
Senior Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) was saddled with the loss after a solid start. He allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks over five innings of work. He struck out four batters.
The Cadets fall to 0-6 on the season and will take on Westminster College on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader. Games are set for noon and 2:30 p.m.
