NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University wrestling team picked up a decisive 34-3 victory over New England College on Sunday in Andrews Hall.
The Cadets exit competition with a 7-7 overall record after picking up its second win of the year against the Pilgrims. New England College falls to 1-7 in their first season of varsity competition.
Senior James Swass (Somerville, N.J.) opened the day strong for the Cadets at 157 pounds, pinning NEC's DJ Brock in exactly one minute. Ahead by a 6-0 margin, senior Richard Garzon (Hawthorne, N.J.) picked up a win by injury default to increase the Cadets lead to 12-0.
Senior Benjamin Swanson (Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.) and classmate David Rogers (Marlborough, Mass.) picked up technical fall victories at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively, to grow the Norwich lead to 22-0. Junior Frank Girolamo (Stoughton, Mass.) would follow with a forfeit win in the heavyweight classification, lifting the Cadets to a commanding 28-0 lead.
The Pilgrims' Eric Wall eked out a 6-4 win by decision at 133 pounds, accounting for his team's three points on the day. Sophomore Sean Randles (Las Vegas, Nev.) rounded out the score for the Cadets with a pin at 141 pounds, elevating the Cadets to the 34-3 win.
The Cadets also honored its graduating senior student-athletes prior to the match. Senior Alec Forezzi (East Greenbush, N.Y.), Pat McCurdy (Woodstown, N.J.), Rogers, Garzon, Swanson and Swass round out the Norwich grapplers expected to graduate this Spring.
Norwich returns to action Sunday, Feb. 12, traveling to Wesleyan (Conn.) to compete against WPI, Centenary and the host Cardinals at high noon.
