Football: Cadets dropped by MIT, 20-0

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Norwich Cadets football team dropped their road matchup with the Engineers of MIT by a 20-0 score on Saturday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action, dropping the Cadets to 1-8 on the year.

The Engineers jumped on the scoreboard early, when defensive back Mitch Turley scooped up a Norwich fumble and ran it back 34 yards to put MIT up 7-0 in the first quarter. Later on in the quarter MIT converted a 30-yard field goal attempt, making the score 10-0 in their favor.

The score held until halftime, as Norwich entered the locker room with nothing but four punts and two turnovers to show for their first half.

Mid-way through the third quarter, the Engineers found their way to the end zone once again, this time by way of the passing game. Quarterback Udgam Goyal found his man Eddy Garcia-Montes, who took it 32 yards to the house, making it 17-0 MIT.

A fourth-quarter Engineer field goal rounded out the score to 20-0, and that's where it sat until time expired and the Engineers went home with the victory.

Norwich finished up the day with 285 total yards of offensive, 176 of it via the ground game. Sophomore Connor Bourque (Goffstown, N.H.) got the majority of the carries, turning 21 attempts on the ground into 95 yards to lead the Cadets.

The defense was lead statistically by sophomore lineman Martin Bailey (Bedford Corners, N.Y) who racked up 11 total tackles on the day. Senior Zach Adler (Stratham, N.H.) forced an MIT fumble, and classmate Austin Roberts (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was able to recover it.

The loss drops the Cadets down to 1-8 overall this season, 1-5 within the NEWMAC. They'll be back in action for the season finale next Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium with a face-off against NEWMAC rival WPI slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
